Athletic Kenya (AK) chairman Isaiah Kiplagat was injured in a robbery in Nairobi.

Kiplagat lost Sh41,000 to a gang that waylaid him at his Karen home gate before escaping in a get-away car, police said. His family was also harassed after the gang forced their way into the house. They stayed for about 30 minutes demanding money and valuables in the Friday night incident.

Kiplagat sustained head injuries and was treated at the Karen Hospital. Police said he was waiting for the gate to be opened when three gunmen, one of them armed with an AK-47 rifle, struck. They forced him out of his car and led him on foot to his house where they demanded money, mobile phones and other valuables. He was hit on the head when he refused to cooperate. The thugs escaped in a car that they had arrived in.

Carjackings In City

Lang’ata OCPD Simon Kina said police are investigating the incident. Police are investigating if the same gang was linked to the attack on politician and businessman Kimani Rugendo, last week. The politician lost a pistol and other valuables. He was not hurt.

Meanwhile, three suspected thugs were shot dead in separate carjacking in the city.

In Parklands, two suspects were shot by police officers on patrol after a car they had hijacked stalled. The owner of the car had been carjacked from the city centre and forced to drive towards Parklands. The car stalled near a team of police officers on patrol giving the motorist a chance to call for help. The gangsters jumped out and were shot dead as they tried to escape.

And in Pangani, one thug was shot by police at dawn after he and his accomplices bid to hijack an Eastleigh bound matatu failed.

Quick action by the matatu driver saved the passengers when he bravely stopped the vehicle before a team of police officers. The three-gang members jumped out of the vehicle and police managed to kill one of them. Two others escaped on foot. Kasarani OCPD Leonard Omolo said the two who escaped had bullet injuries.

Paradise lost, then regained

Last week on Friday my colleague Tony Mochama took the Home and Away team, way back to 1667 and reminded me of my literature classes a few years ago with a rendition of John Milton’s Paradise Lost.
