Sub-provinces: Eye on 2012 polls or reforms?
By Kepher Otieno
The Government has created two more sub-provinces even as a cross-section of Kenyans continue to question the motive behind the administrative units.
The Standard reliably learnt the number of sub-provinces has now reached 22 after two were added, reportedly to accommodate interests of certain communities in Nyanza and Rift Valley.
Internal Security Assistant Minister Orwa Ojode (right) confirmed West Rift and Southern Nyanza regions have been added to the list.
Accommodate Interests
Southern Nyanza, which was initially lumped together with Eastern Nyanza, will now have its headquarters in Homa Bay. Eastern Nyanza will be administered from Kisii town and cater for the Gusii and Kuria.
Also added to the list is Western Rift, to be governed from Kericho town. It was originally part of Western Rift Valley, which will now be called Eastern Rift with offices in Eldoret.
The minister said: "We realised some regions were not happy and we quickly amended the list upwards to accommodate their interests".
Meanwhile, ODM MPs from Rift Valley have asked the party to convene an urgent Parliamentary Group meeting to discuss the issue.
Speaking to The Standard separately, MPs Julius Kones, Isaac Ruto and Musa Sirma said there was no consultation.
