It was a relief for cancer and kidney patients after the Government announced yesterday that it had acquired Sh800 million diagnostic and treatment equipment for two hospitals in Kwale County.

Deputy President William Ruto said that the equipment was being installed in Kinango and Msambweni hospitals and would be launched next month.

Speaking during the burial of Kinango MP Ngozi Rai’s mother,  Rebecca Umazi Rai, at Kinangoni village in Kinango Sub County, the DP said the equipment will ease the burden for patients seeking treatment in Mombasa and abroad.

“The Government is equipping the two hospitals with modern equipment in an effort to screen these diseases and enable them get early treatment. I urge Kinango and Kwale residents to go for early screening,” said Ruto.

He said cancer was curable if detected early.

The MP’s mother died in India last week where she had been taken for treatment for cancer.

Ruto also announced that construction of the Kwale-Kinango-Samburu Road would begin by the end of the year.

He said the Government will tarmac the Mariakani-Kinango-Lunga Lunga Road in an effort to open up Kwale County for development.

“We have plans to tarmac key roads in Kwale County an effort to open up the area for trade and investment,” he said.

Also present at the burial were Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya, Leader of Majority Aden Duale, Mining Cabinet Secretary Dan Kazungu and MPs Gideon Mung’aro (Kilifi North), Khatib Mwashetani (Lunga Lunga), Harrison Kombe (Magharini) and Zainab Chidzuga (Kwale Women Rep).

Ruto, who was on his second day tour of Kwale, said plans were under way to expand four major water projects in the county at a cost of Sh70 billion in the next five years.

The expansion of Mkande dam in Shimba Hills, Mwache dam in Mazarus, Nyale dam in Kinango and construction of the second Mzima pipeline is expected to boost food security in the region.

“These projects will provide water for domestic use, livestock and irrigation and will completely transform Kwale County,” he told the mourners.

Formidable outfit

At the same time Ruto announced that the government will connect 630 households to electricity in Kinango by September 16.

“The last mile electricity connection project in the country is real and by September 16, a total of 630 families in this village will be connected to power,” he said.

On politics, Ruto defended Jubilee’s decision to fold affiliate parties to form a formidable outfit, saying this will foster national unity, end tribalism and religious divisions.

“We want all tribes and all religions to be one nation and that is why we are bringing all parties together under Jubilee,” he said.

Governor Mvurya commended the DP for touring the county and commissioning development projects.

“The county is making remarkable progress in economic development owing to co-operation with the national government,” he said.

Mr Mung’aro noted that Coast counties were experiencing faster development because local MPs had resolved to work with the national government.

“You are going to see construction of key roads in Kwale and the region because the Jubilee government is listening to us. You should therefore reciprocate and support the government,” the MP said.
