Strathmore University must explain botched security drill to the government, Education CS Fred Matiang'i says

The Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Education Science and Technology, Dr Fred Matiang’i, has asked Strathmore University to formally explain to the government the circumstances under which the university lost a staff member 30 students got injured during a botched security drill.

Dr Matiang’i's directive comes a day after a bungled security drill simulating a terrorist attack on the university that sought to test the preparedness of the university community in the event of a terror attack.

Dr Matiang’i expressed surprise at what happened, saying, however, that the university should build sufficient capabilities to handle security and other emergencies.

The CS has in the meantime, assured the public that his Ministry will work with relevant government agencies in instituting investigations into the incident and take appropriate action against those responsible for the disaster.

Dr Matiang’i emphasized the need for educational institutions to properly prepare for security risks to avoid causing untold   trauma to staff, students and parents of students.

The Cabinet Secretary visited the University last night upon learning of the botched drill where he consulted with the Vice-Chancellor Prof John Odhiambo and condole with the university community.
