Nairobi, Kenya - Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission detectives on Tuesday morning staged a raid on the homes of former Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru and other ministry officials in ongoing graft probe.

The EACC detectives also raided the Nairobi home of former planning Principal Secretary Peter Mang’iti and the home of National Youth Service Director General Nelson Githinji. Officials said the detectives had a court order and search warrants to stage the raids on the homes.

They also raided homes of former senior Devolution and Planning Ministry and NYS officials as they searched for documents they said they wanted.

Waiguru’s lawyer Ahmedinassir Abdullahi confirmed that some detectives were at her home.

“I am told some officers are at the home. I am headed there to see what they want,” said Ahmedinassir.

The officers are said to have arrived at Waiguru’s house at about 6.30 AM.

Mangiti and Githinji have been prosecuted for trying to dissuade Githinji’s deputy Adan Harakhe from reporting and following up with the matter relating to the loss of Sh695 million. They were charged for tampering with a public service officer contrary to the Penal Code.

Ms Waiguru resigned two weeks ago following months of sustained pressure over corruption allegations in her ministry.

Waiguru cited “doctor’s advice” as the major reason for her abrupt departure from the plum ministry.

“I have therefore, following my doctor’s advice — who is sitting next to me — requested his Excellency the President to relieve me of the responsibilities of the Cabinet Secretary for Devolution and Planning and should he find it fit, to accord me such lighter duties as he shall deem appropriate,” she said.

Waiguru said following sustained attacks by mischievous parties on herself and her family, her health had deteriorated with her doctor asking her to “take time off”.

She said though the experience has had devastating effects on her health, it has not killed her spirit.
