Kenya Revenue Authority in talks to collect county revenues

Kenya Revenue Authority has opened talks to collect revenues on behalf of counties, Commissioner Domestic Taxes, Alice Owour has told the Senate.

She said KRA has been engaging with individual county governments to provide revenue collection services.

"We are encouraged by the response from the respective county governments, which we have been engaging with a view to ob-taining their buy-in for our Agency services," Ms Owuor said, adding, "Indications so far point to a general consensus by the counties to partner with KRA."

Once complete, the ongoing negotiations are expected to culminate in the development of an implementation framework and the signing of MoUs with willing county governments.

While responding to allegations that KRA has been victimising some county governments, Owuor reiterated that KRA applies existing tax laws uniformly on all taxpayers in the spirit of fairness.

Already, KRA, she said, has been undertaking tax audit exercises at the county level as part of i's mandate to ensure tax compliance in the public sector. So far, the ongoing audit intervention, Owuor said, has covered 37 out of the 47 counties.
