Why women are 'officially' attracted to older and chubbier men

Relationships

Don't worry too much if you're overweight and single, guys. Have another chocolate egg.

Well, if you believe this scientist, who says that older, slightly podgy men are more attractive to the opposite sex. Apparently, they even live longer and are more equipped to pass on their genes.

According to Richard Bribiescas, professor of anthropology and deputy provost at Yale University, men with high metabolisms are around 50 per cent more likely to die – as their bodies burn up less energy at rest.

Bribiescas argues that a "dad bod" could be a good thing – that little bit of extra chunk you usually acquire at 30, or at fatherhood, due to decreasing testosterone levels. It's supposed to come, isn't it? No?

It may not fit the 'macho ideal', but it does, Bribiescas argues, strengthen the immune system. And in turn, act as a lure for potential lovers? They want you around, as Her points out.

Bribiescas wrote about all this in his book How Men Age: What Evolution Reveals About Male Health and Mortality . It supports a 2008 study which found the same.

Is It O.K. for a woman to audibly comment on how a man looks on the street?

“Macho makes you sick," the professor said. "The Hollywood image of the swaggering, dashing man dispatching bad guys and carrying the day conjures up a perception of indestructibility.

“While men are on average larger and physically stronger than women, they also have a considerable weakness."

The scientist adds: “We have a harder time fighting off infections and illness compared with women, and… men simply do not take care of themselves. This has a significant negative impact on the pace at which men age.”

Bribiescas also thinks that becoming a little podgier prompts men to invest more time with their children, rather than looking for other women. This benefits family life. Another thing women crave.

“[One] effect of lower testosterone levels is loss of muscle mass and increases in fat mass,” Bribiescas wrote.

“This change in body composition not only causes men to shop for more comfortable trousers but also facilitates increased survivorship and, hypothetically, a hormonal milieu that would more effectively promote and support paternal investment.”

All this makes sense, we suppose. Though we don't know what constitutes overweight so that you might shorten your life, and a healthy bit of podge that keeps you on point in later years.
