Nakuru County government to revamp public schools

Nakuru county Governor Kinuthia Mbugua on Wednesday said that his government will embark on improvement of infrastructure in public primary and secondary schools in the county in order to improve learning.

While speaking in Langa Langa Primary a school established in 1964, during the school’s AGM, the governor pointed out that most public schools in the county needed a revamp as most of them were built over 50 years ago.

 “We have assessed the school’s facilities and we are going to consult with the head teacher and the Board of Management on how we shall aid the school in renovating classrooms, toilets, and the fence.” The Governor said.

He added that other facilities like desks and books will also be provided.

He noted that the county government had earlier partnered with Flamingo MCA Hon. Moses Gichangi to renovate five classrooms and promised to work closely with Nakuru East MP Hon. David Gikaria to do more work in the school and others in the area.

The school’s headmaster Mr. Charles Kimani thanked the Governor for the gesture even though primary schools were the responsibility of the national government and commended him for his endevour to improve education in the county.

Langa Langa Primary has a population of 1496 pupils, 700 of these are girls who share only ten toilets, 70 girls use one toilet. It is recommended by the Ministry of Education guidelines for 25 pupils to share one toilet.

Ms. Annastacia Kitheka, the Nakuru County Director of Education commended the Governor for enabling a thriving rapport between national and county government to improve education in the region.

Nakuru County KNUT Executive Secretary, Mungai Muhia reiterated Kitheka’s sentiments adding that he has also worked with the Governor on several education projects like bursaries and donation of uniforms which plays part in supporting education.

Besides renovating the five classes in Flamingo Ward, the County Government of Nakuru has also built one ECDE class in Kimathi Primary School; in Lake View Primary; three ECDE classrooms rehabilitated, four newly constructed and Sanitation block construction is in progress. Two new ECDE classrooms have been constructed in Race Track and construction of an administration block budgeted for this financial year 2016/17. In Pangani Primary; three ECDE classrooms have been built.

The County Government of Nakuru has spent Sh. 275 million in bursaries and construction of educational facilities in the last two years.
