Nigerian actress Ini Edo has opened up about her struggles with miscarriages and her decision to become a mother through surrogacy.
She revealed her experiences during the third season of Young, Famous & African, offering rare insights into her personal life.
“I got married at 26 because I thought that at 31, I would be done with childbearing, and I would have retired and faced my career, but life didn’t pan out that way,” Ini shared. “I tried… I have had over six miscarriages… I don’t like going into it. I have tried…it was not a fancy way out for me; I have always wanted to do this. I have done IVFs. I have lost it half midway through. I know what I have dealt with as a woman.”
Ini disclosed that she eventually turned to surrogacy, a decision she described as both emotional and practical. “I went through surrogacy,” she said. “There was no man in my life at the time, and I wanted to have a child. There are different ways to go about that. I don’t think surrogacy is something people just wake up and say that’s what they want to do. I never thought I would be someone who had fertility issues. But I’ve had issues carrying pregnancies long-term.”
She added: “When it looked like it was not going to happen the way I wanted it to happen and I wasn’t getting younger, I said, ‘What are the options? What is available to me?’ And then, this option came up, so I took it.”

Ini also revealed she is raising her child alone, with the father absent from their lives. “Are you married?” co-star Nadia Nakai asked during the show.
“I’m not married,” Ini replied.
“Are you together with the dad?” Nadia followed up.
“No, I’m not,” Ini said.
“Is he still alive?”
“Well, I don’t know,” Ini replied.
“Girl, is he dead or not? It’s a yes or no question,” Nadia pressed.
“He’s not dead. He doesn’t have anything to do with us. We’re just two people. Just me and my child,” Ini responded.
During her confessional, Ini reflected on her decision to share her story. “My journey is one that I have not really wanted to talk about because it’s personal.” She added, “I’m raising her alone. Today, I can say I’m happy with my decision.”
Ini was previously married to Nigerian-American businessman Philip Ehiagwina in 2008. Their marriage ended in divorce in 2014, amid widespread speculation about the breakup. She later addressed it briefly, saying, “I have not spoken to anyone about the breakup of my marriage, and I won’t. It’s my past, and it belongs there.”
