‘Ruto lawyer’ wears lipstick but says that he is not gay

Lawyer Felix Kiprono Matagei has denied rumours that he is gay, claiming people are only out to tarnish his name.

This week, a photo of him wearing lipstick was circulated on social media, raising queries about his sexuality.

Speaking to The Nairobian, Kiprono said he was shocked when his friends called him about the rumours that had gone viral. “I decided to apply lipstick in support of the #MyDressMyChoice campaign, which was against women being stripped.

I took a photo and posted it online, but I was shocked when people started claiming that I am gay. I mean, why judge someone. I fully support this campaign since stripping women is wrong and the police must arrest the culprits,” he said.

Kiprono revealed that he represented a city gay group last year, and suspects this could have fuelled the rumours.

“These claims started in February. I am a human rights lawyer and I have been interacting with gays and transgender groups in an effort to help them understand their rights.

People started associating me with the group,” he said, adding that he has been in various gay meetings as a guest speaker, but is categorical that he is not gay.

“I respect the gay community. Mid this year, I was invited to a gay book launch and I was the keynote speaker.

People ought to understand that human rights lawyers have no boundaries when it comes to clients,” said the young lawyer who hit the headlines when he filed a petition asking Chief Justice Willy Mutunga to swear in Deputy President William Ruto at a time President Uhuru was at The Hague.

Kiprono is currently working on a book titled Gay Rights in Kenya: A Need for Special Legislation.
