Lawyer rooting for Ruto presidency ‘kidnapped and stripped naked’

Lawyer Felix Kiprono

Last week, a young lawyer Felix Kiprono Matagei, stunned the country when he asked the Chief Justice to swear in Willian Ruto as President. Now, he claims he did not attend the mentioning of his case on October 10 because he was kidnapped in town by ‘fake journalists.’ He spoke to Irvin Jalang’o.

You say you were kidnapped, where did this happen and what could be the reason?

I was kidnapped next to Ambassador Hotel by men in black who had requested to interview me. They asked me to get into a black Range Rover so that we could go have the interview at Hotel Intercontinental.

But when I got inside the car, they instructed me to be silent and threatened to ‘silence me’ if I did not comply. The men had pistols. They said they had been sent from ‘the high office’ with firm instructions to shoot me if I did not withdraw the case seeking to have Ruto sworn in as the President.

What was the interview for?

It was for the recent case I had filed after President Uhuru handed over the presidency to Ruto as acting president. They introduced themselves as journalists who wanted to interview me. They even had cameras and they looked like real journalists.

Did you record a statement?

Yes, I recorded a statement at the KICC Police Station the same day.

How long did the ordeal last?

About seven hours. It was on Tuesday, October 7.

When they were done, where did they drop you?

They left me at the outskirts of Thika. I took a boda boda to Thika town and later a matatu to Nairobi.

Can you identify the kidnappers?

From their accents and looks, they could have been of Somali origin. They didn’t seem to have a definite leader.

Did they harm you in any way?

They made me walk naked for a distance and threatened me. They promised to finish me if I didn’t withdraw the case, calling the kidnap a final warning and that ‘silencing’ would automatically follow.

Do you feel safe now?

No. I will be leaving the country for political asylum as soon as possible. My friends and family are aware of my situation and have advised me to leave.
