 President Kenyatta tours Kibera Slums

State House wants Jubilee MCAs to stop complaining about development projects in areas perceived to be Cord’s.

This was in response to the story Why develop Corded areas, Jubilee MCAs, that ran in the The Nairobian (January 16-22).The Nairobian has since established that some powerful figures want the city Jubilee MCAs to stop complaining.

Abdi Guyo had claimed early this month that the Jubilee government was sidelining slums in their zones. He reportedly received a call from State House on January 20 asking him to go slow.

Some Jubilee MCAs said the presidency wants them to go slow on the issue of Kibra slum development, which is seen as an attempt to win the opposition’s voting bloc.

Similar developments are ongoing in Mathare, Mukuru and Korogocho slums, which are considered Cord strongholds. Guyo claimed they were implored to stop the protests. He however could not disclose the caller.

The minority side has criticised Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru of allegedly misleading the government.

President Uhuru started the slums facelift project in Kibra in September 2014.

However, on September 17, Kibra Cord MCAs, Maurice Akuk, Pius K’Otieno and Catherine Akoth criticised the move saying they would not support it.
