Naks High: Here, Lenku forgot herding and marauding lions

Nakuru High School would not have been were it not for the 15th colonial governor of Kenya, Edward Macleay Grigg.

The governor initiated the construction of the school in 1927, even though he did not have in mind the interests of African children.

At the time, modern education was a rumour, as Kenyans busied themselves with herding, farming, fishing or planning how to get rid of the white man from the country.

Grigg, a career journalist, founded the school as Francis Scott High School, but reserved it for the children of white British administrators.

Towards the end of 1950s, the school already had fully furbished classrooms, science laboratories and a weather station for geography practical lessons.

In the co-curriculum frontier, it had swimming pools, cricket fields, basketball courts, as well as rugby and soccer pitches.

It was not until 1963, when Kenya attained her independence, that the school was renamed Nakuru High School. The school then started admitting local children, and opened its doors to girls in 1964. In 1982,it had its first African principal.

Today, Nakuru High School admits a huge number of multiracial students. The surging student population forced the school to be split into Nakuru Boys High School and Nakuru Girls High School in 2006.

Sitting on a 200-acre land, the school has produced notable figures, scholars, actors and other luminaries in different sectors. Notably, rugby has been a signature game for the school.

The alumni include Mount Kenya University deputy VC John Nderitu and University of Nairobi Students Welfare Authority director Robert Lugwe, as well as the deputy principal of  Pwani University College, Mwakio Tole.

It is also here that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government Joseph ole Lenku mastered political survival skills.
