Facing ‘the cut’ in the traditional way is no joke. It calls for young boys to be filled with courage and determination to face the knife without flinching.

And to ensure success, a lot of preparation is done, including exorcising by all means any bad omens that may compromise the ‘tools of trade’ as was the case in Kaunda village of Navakholo in Bungoma County.

The circumcision daggers were sharpened, the prayers said and a white cockerel’s blood poured to ‘cleanse’ the blades.
