New Mauritius government sacks central bank governor

The Mauritius central bank governor on Saturday said he had been sacked by the Indian Ocean island’s new government after seven years at the helm of the bank. He hinted  he may appeal the move. “My contract has been terminated with immediate effect. I have received a letter from the secretary of the President of the Republic,” Bank of Mauritius Governor Rundheersing Bheenick said on phone. Bheenick, who received the dismissal letter on Friday, was handed a third three-year term by the bank last year. It was not immediately clear why he was sacked. Bheenick said he would consult his lawyers on whether the government, elected earlier this month, had the constitutional right to sack the central bank governor.   -Reuters
