Garissa contractors put on notice over shoddy work

Kenya: Road contractors who fleece the government of billions of shillings through shoddy work will be blacklisted, Garissa County government has warned. Deputy Governor Abdullahi Hussein (pictured)says contractors who will not adhere to the specifications in the Bills of Quantities (BQs) will not be paid, and risk losing business with the county.

Speaking while on tour to monitor development projects in seven sub-counties, Hussein said contractors must give the public value for money.

“They must stick to the official drawings as indicated in the contractual paper work and come-up with a standard work,” said the deputy governor.

He said second year into devolution, business will not be as usual and that the local government expects the contractors to carry out their work professionally. The deputy governor said the region’s residents who have been marginalised for years expect to gain economically from the devolved government. “We are prepared to be more engaging and productive in order to serve our people,” he added.

While on tour of Ijara and Hulugho sub-counties, the deputy governor supervised completed and ongoing projects, which includes roads, health, water and education facilities.
