Gor: You must have a diploma to run for seat

Gor Mahia is set to scrap up to eight elective posts as it seeks to transform its club into a lean outfit.

The club has called for a Special General Meeting (SGM) on April 9 to pass a new constitution that will have them retain only four elective posts and appoint a professional secretariat in a raft of changes.

According to the draft constitution, the positions to be scrapped include senior vice-chairman, first vice chairman and second vice-chairman and the positions are currently held by Francis Wasuna, John Pesa and George Ongudi. It will be replaced by one post of vice chairman.

Also to be scrapped are positions of Assistant Secretary General and Deputy Secretary General held by Kevin Odhiambo and Ronald Ngala respectively.

The assistant treasurer’s post will be done away with just as seats for Organising Secretary held by the controversial Judith Anyango ‘Nyangi’ and Assistant Organising Secretary position. The post of executive member will be deleted if members adopt the new constitution.

The four posts to be retained are the chairman, vice chairman, secretary general and treasurer.

Apart from having a lean executive committee, the proposed constitution sets high standards for those aspiring for elective posts.

“They must be holders of at least a diploma in any field,”  says part of the draft that has been circulated to members.

It is the first time the club is setting academic qualification for its office holders and is geared towards attracting educated officials to transform the club’s management.

It may not be a walk in the park to be elected as a Gor Mahia official as one will need to have been a member for at least three years and have the endorsement of 20 of its branches.

Elected officials will eligible for a one term of four years renewable only once for the same period in line with the Sports Act. Those elected must be over 21 years old.

The club now has incorporated in its constitution its secretariat which shall be headed by a Chief Executive Officer who must hold a Bachelors of Business Administration degree.

Under the CEO, shall be a Finance Officer, a Media Liason Officer and Security Liason Officer.

In a bid to tighten its revenue leaks, the draft constitution proposes that the club adopt e-ticketing to sale its match tickets and the new Chief Executive shall identify a company to carry out the purpose.

Another ambitious proposal is for 20 per cent of the club’s revenue to be spent on its youth team.
