razilian team signs goalkeeper convicted of killing girlfriend and having her body fed to his pet dogs

It is no doubt that football will never cease to surprise us. From the early and late goals, the drama on and off the pitch, to the over spending done constantly every summer on less than worthy players, we will always stay astonished by what we hear and see on our TV screens when football news comes up.

However, it doesn’t go without saying that football can be as cruel as the coat making lady in the movie 101 Dalmatians. Last minutes losses, unexpected victories, horrific injuries and even instant deaths on the pitch are just but some of the things professional footballers have to go through once they sign that huge money contract.

Brazil prides itself in being one of the best footballing nations in the world, having clinched World Cup trophies and having produced many of the globe’s best ever players. But, a recent event in Brazil threatens to taint the image of Brazilian clubs forever.

Bruno Fernandez de Souza, who is also known as ‘Bruno’ was the number one goalkeeper at super club Flamengo and was found guilty of orchestrating the murder of a woman, Eliza Samudio, whose body was fed to Bruno’s pet dogs after she died.

It is believed that Bruno met the model at a party and go along with her well, got her pregnant but realized his mistakes, therefore aimed to avoid child support by murdering Eliza. The model had sued the highly-rated goalkeeper for evading child support, which in turn jeopardized a big money transfer to Italian side AC Milan.

Eliza Samudio paid a lethal price for having a baby with the football star, who confessed about how he orchestrated the murder – torturing and strangling the model until she died, chopped her body into pieces and fed her to his pet dogs, Rottweilers. He was sentenced to 22 years in jail.

A month ago, Bruno was released by a Brazilian court, sighting ‘legal technicality’ as to why the goalkeeper could not be held in prison for much longer. Immediately after his release, it is impossible to believe that he would ever play football again but, a second division club in Brazil known as Boa Esporte handed him a two year contract. This news was stongly criticized by the parents of eliza, who felt like Bruno had not received enough punishment for his mistakes.

As a normal player would, Bruno Fernandez de Souza aims to return to top flight football, seeking that fresh start he always wanted and maybe, playing for one of the top clubs in Europe and South America who are still showing interest.

Football will never cease to amaze us.
