Lodwar-The new party capital of the North

For ages, showbiz in Kenya has revolved around major cities with little mention of the smaller towns but for an odd incident here and there.

To most Kenyans, Turkana is often characterised by hunger and famine and as the host of Kakuma, one of Africa’s largest refugee camps.

That was the image I expected when I landed in Lodwar town, the capital and by far the biggest settlement of Turkana county, especially after experiencing a dry heat wave when the airplane doors opened.

That would be one the few expectations that would live up because surprises rolled in thick and fast. For starters flights are regular and average Sh12,000, which is a relief for those not keen to brave the nine-hour road trip.

Just like Christ the Redeemer dominates the skyline in Rio-de-Janeiro, Brazil, a similar 30-metre statue on the tallest hill close the airport is a sight to behold. Accommodation too, has greatly improved.

This writer put up at Cradle Luxury Tented Camp, the lead resort in Lodwar. After a day dipping in the camp’s pool, the evening’s cool called for a tipple and the recommended spots were Homeland and Marble clubs, which work tooth and nail to become the top dogs in matters entertainment.

Interestingly, however, after checking into the two spots that boast relatively good space, revellers were sparse. Upon inquiry I learned that the town comes alive in the dead of the night.

Newbie singer Naiboi, riding high with the track Gudigudi, was in the house and left Cradle Camp at two in the night for his performance at Homeland club.

The source gave a background of the healthy competition the two clubs have. While the former boasts a large performance arena, the latter boasts modern fittings.

When Homeland Club flew in Tanzanian act Ali Kiba last December, Marble Club during its official launch responded by treating residents to a Valentine’s date with country mate Diamond Platnumz.

For residents it has been a downpour of stars every other week, something rivaling even the capital Nairobi. Every East African star of repute including Mr Nice, Willy Paul, Jaguar, Prezzo, Rich Mavoko, Susumila, Wyre, and Osogo Winyo have graced this town.

Top DJs and comedians like Chipukeezy, Owago, Karis, Crème de la Crème, Lyta, and Kalonje among others have also exhibited their skill in Lodwar.

The rivalry also has political undertones as one source intimated. Homeland Club’s proprietor Robert Lowoko alias Roba One aspires to become Member of County Assembly (MCA) while Marble Club’s owner is gunning to become a member of Parliament.

Abel Imana, the manager and resident deejay (DJ Kaka) at Homeland club attributed the town’s good fortune to an economic growth in the town that currently hosts at least 60,000 inhabitants.

With the discovery of oil and implementation of the devolved system of government, many residents are either gainfully employed or benefiting from tenders.

The party is not limited to Lodwar CBD, because Valu Valu hit-maker Jose Chameleone recently brought the roof down at Sandfields hotel in the outskirts of Turkana.

Lodwar is set to host a three-day beach party this Jamhuri Day (yes you read that right, beach party).

Turkana Beach Party, now in its third year, courtesy of Napak Camp located in Eliye springs some 50 kilometres east of Lodwar is touted as Turkana’s biggest party drawing revellers from far and wide.

The posters ask revellers to adhere to the beach wear dress code at the party headlined by Nairobi’s DJ Rillance of Bugika Entertainment who will be performing alongside surprise stars.

Speaking to Pulse, the organisers of the event and proprietors of Napak Camp Longor Asimit and Bevlyne Lokone confirmed that the event is a highlight that continues Eliye’s merrymaking tradition.

For those not in the know, Eliye Springs beach area enjoyed astonishing popularity back in the 1970’s with the international jet set who flew in from Nairobi with private planes to spend a weekend angling on the lake and partying on the beach.

With a fresh-water mineral spring to quench thirst, endless palm fringed sand beaches, and a massive sand dune from which one can enjoy a panoramic view of Lake Turkana the spot truly is heavenly destination.

We at Pulse will be on hand to give you a peek into the biggest party in the North.
