After mumbling a bit, amidst some teasing from her co-host who kept shouting “twelve!”, she rather coyly revealed that she was 17 the first time she did it.

Internationally acclaimed artiste Chris Brown, who is scheduled to perform in Kenya for the first time on October 8, would probably find that too late if his revelations that he was only eight years old when he lost his virginity to a local girl who was almost twice his age are anything to go by. The 27-year-old who has coined himself a name as a ladies’ man saw nothing wrong in becoming sexually active at such a tender age and explains that unlike most of his peers who were home playing video games, he was watching pornography and having sex. While many would definitely see eight years as far too young, the singer who boasts of his bedroom abilities claims it enabled him gain experience and hence his ability to handle women well. “Most women I have been with won’t have any complaints since it is all good,” he said in a recent interview. All said and done, there is no denying that the controversial singer has not been able to settle down with one woman. This even after declaring in public that he was ready to settle down in 2014 with his girlfriend of nearly five years, Karrueche Tran. Chris Brown’s close friend Tyga has always taken the initiative to push him to settle down and avoid messing around. “ I don’t want Chris to be that 30 and still out there in the clubs, popping bottles, taking the whole club home to the mansion in the early morning hours — that’s tired and old,” he said during one of his interviews. Despite singing the jam, I Invented Sex, Trey Songz, who was in the country recently for Coke Studio recording reveals that he lost his virginity to his first close girlfriend who already had had sex. “I was young and inexperienced unlike her who knew a lot about sex and she taught me. Today, as an adult I realise that I love to please a woman by finding out what she loves in terms of sex,” concluded Trey Songs.

Locally, controversial rapper Bobby Mapesa, whose latest hits are Tuzidi and Yesndio, recalls that he did it for the first time at the age of 11. Bobby remembers that he had just completed examinations and was on the long December holiday when he had the encounter with an elderly lady while in the process of playing kalongolongo (playing house). He cheekily adds that about three years later, he had another ‘sexcapade’ with a pastor’s daughter during a kesha (night vigil). “At the time I knew very little about the consequences of indulging in early sex. Instead I was out to experiment owing to the huge number of pornography I watched in cyber cafes and at friends’ houses while their parents were away,” says Mapesa who is yet to settle down.

Gospel rapper, Juliani reveals that he lost his virginity at 12, at a time when where most of his peers grappled with ‘weightier’ problems such as owning video games and passing algebra. The singer whose life story is a classic tale of his rise from grass to grace says as a class three pupil together with a pack of friends they were already exposed to adult content such as magazines which would make rounds in class as their teacher rumbled on, teaching, oblivious of what they were up to. Like his peers, he had a girlfriend, whom he recalls he would touch naively, mirroring the life he had grown watching the adults around the informal settlements he grew up in. “Together with a pack of my companions we did what our elder peers did and before I knew it I had already gotten a taste of what I long desired for,” he concludes. Singer Gin Ideal who lost her virginity at 19 while in college recalls it was scary and at some point she became paranoid about it wondering why she did it.

The dangers of under-age sex

Daniel Hailiwa, an adolescents counsellor, Straight talk foundation Kenya spoke to Pulse about the issue.

He says it is unfortunate that many young people are engaging in underage sex. Many cases of students taking advantage of school trips and holidays to engage in sexual activities have been on the rise, prompting interventions from the police.

According to the Kenya Aids indicator Survey (KAIS 2013), the median age of sex debut in Kenya is shocking 15 years.

It is important to note that these adolescents are not ready for the physical and emotional consequences associated with sex.

Sex leads to pregnancy. Pregnancy leads to dropping out of school and stigma.  This might have devastating emotional effect on growing youth as they are no longer considered children by the society. Unprotected sex can also lead to sexually transmitted infections.

Medical complications could arise at birth because these girls have underdeveloped birth canals. A pregnant teen is at a higher risk of uncontrolled bleeding after giving birth and vesicle-vaginal fistula.

In a nutshell, it is important for the youth to understand the consequences of underage sex through an age-appropriate sex education curriculum in schools.
