Boda boda not fit for Somali women

A Muslim cleric from Garissa wants women banned from riding on boda bodas. Sheikh Ali Hassan has written to Garissa County Government demanding that they introduce more ‘lady friendly’ means of transport like tuk tuks.

“These boda bodas embarrass our women. At least, the tuk tuks will protect their dignity and reduce the rampant accidents,” he said.

The cleric further claimed that the boda boda business was spoiling kids since most of them drop out of school to join the business.

“ The motorbikes are a threat to the youth’s livelihood, safety and future. Most of them are not even trained and that is why we are having so many accidents,” he said.

However, some local women have dismissed these attempts.

“If somebody wants to decide how I travel, then, he should foot the bill. It is unfair to prevent us from using boda boada since they are affordable,” said Isnino Mohamed, a resident of Garissa..
