Chandaria wins at Muthaiga as World ranking event ends at Muthaiga, while Kenya amateurs lose in Uganda

Windsor’s Akshay Chandaria carded a round total of 302 gross to emerge the overall winner of this year’s Kenya Junior Strokes play championship at the par 71 Muthaiga course.

Playing off handicap 2, Chandaria carded 78,72,76,74 in the four rounds to emerge the champion at the 72 hole.

The three-day event organised by the Junior Golf Foundation (JGF) of Kenya brought together 44 leading juniors from golf clubs in the country.

The tournament is one of the World Ranking events in the country. The weekend round was used to select a team (Boy and Girl) to represent Kenya in the All Africa Junior Golf Championship to be held in Zimbabwe in March next year.

Kericho’s Victor Maiyo was the nett winner on 262 Nett while the Gross winner in the 16-18 years category was Muthaiga’s Naomi Wafula on 304 gross.

Kibugu Mutahi from Muthaiga, who last month represented Kenya at the British Open alongside Club mate and current Kenya Lady champion Kellie Gachaga, was the gross winner on 302 for the ages 13-15 years.

Tanzania’s Celina Patel from Dar es Salaam’s Gymkhana’s was the gross winner for the ages of 12 years and under on 424 gross.

Kellie failed to participate after arriving from the USA when the tournament had teed off.

At the same venue, handicap 19 Job Kamau posted 38 points to win the KAM/KPLC sponsored tournament on Saturday.

Amit Chanria playing off handicap 14 was the KAM winner on 34 points and the same for the Lady winner was handicap 27 Aruna Shah.

David Mwindi on 38 points and Wambui Gitonga on 36 were the men and lady winners respectively for the KPLC prizes.

Meanwhile Kenya top Amateurs at the Uganda golf club in Kitante again lost the battle for the second year running to home golfer and defending Champion Ronald Otie who claimed the Tusker Malt Uganda open Amateur Golf Championship on Saturday.

The Toro golfer posted a total gross aggregate score of 291 in 72 holes played over 4 days to lead the board.

Kenya’s Paul Muchangi on 301 gross was third while other Kenyans in top ten were Dennis Saikwa (306) and Edwin Mudanyi who tied on the same score.

Focus now shifts to Kenya professionals who face Ugandans from August 31.
