Gor Mahia, Chemelil Sugar and Tusker all won their GOtv shield matches played yesterday to make it to the next round of the competition.

Gor Mahia edged out Nairobi Stima 2-0 while Tusker sent out Uprising 3-0 with Chemelil Sugar sending home fellow Kenyan Premier League side Nairobi City Stars 3-2.

Focus was no doubt on Nyayo Stadium where Gor Mahia were expected to easily sail through to the second round in their quest for a treble this season.

Stima managed to hold Gor Mahia for the whole of the first half and always looked dangerous that they would score.

But their stubbornness was broken in the second half when Enock Agwanda and Meddie Kagere scored a goal each.

Agwanda scored in the first minute of the second half and that appeared to disorient the opposition. When Kagere added the second in the 71st minute, it killed off Stima’s fighting spirit.

At Awasi, Chemelil Sugar took advantage of playing at home to edge out Nairobi City Stars 3-2.

It all looked to be going for a 2-2 tie when John Mwita netted the winner for Chemelil Sugar.

The sugar millers had gone ahead in the 40th minute when Victor Majid sent home Oscar Oketch’s well-laid pass.

City Stars were more adventurous in the second half during which they kept their opponents on the defensive and it was always a matter of when they would get a goal.

In the 50th minute Benson Iregi scored the equaliser for City Stars after being put through by Ezekiel Odera. But the celebration lasted only three minutes with Mustafa Adebaya sending Chemelil Sugar ahead for the second time.

But a hard-fighting City Stars were not taking it lying down and were back into the match at the hour mark when Robert Ndungu scored.

In Machakos, Stephen Owusu and Allan Wanga scored a goal each as Tusker thumped Uprising 3-0 at Kenyatta Stadium. The third goal was an own goal by the losers who could not contain the pressure from the brewers.

In Kisumu, Agrochemicals thumped Vihiga United FC 1-0 as Ulinzi FC piped Muhoroni Youth FC 2-0 at the Kisumu Stadium during a double header GOtv Shield encounter.

Tom Adwar scored the solitary goal for Agrochemicals in the 62nd minute of the game that was watched by hundreds of supporters among them the Vihiga Governor Moses Akaranga while Samuel Onyango scored for Ulinzi FC.

Muhoroni will have to blame the confusion that was brought in by Yussuf Mohammed and Wycliffe Nyangechi who obstructed their keeper making it hard for him to dive for the ball resulting into the early goal.

Ezekiel Otuoma twice failed to score after being set up by both Erick Apul and Rutto and blasted the efforts wide. There were two quick corners for the Ulinzi side that brought the number to six but all of them failed to yield any fruit.
