Homeboyz to headline Maasai Sevens tournament

It’s all systems go for this weekend’s (July 23-24) inaugural Maasai Sevens rugby tournament at the Champagne Park, Kipeto Village in Kiserian, Kajiado County. Nine teams have already confirmed their participation, with recently crowned Masaku Sevens champions Homeboyz RFC headlining the top clubs that will battle for first place prize money of Sh250,000.

Other teams are Mean Machine, Bungoma RFC, Catholic Monks, Comras RFC, Webuye RFC, Kilunda RFC and Kajiado combined. National schools sevens champions Laiser Hill, Ngong Hills Academy and Comras will compete in the age-group category as Maasai Warriors, Maasai Newcomers and Tusker Ndovu take part in the touch rugby category.

In yesterday’s press briefing in Nairobi, which was attended by Kenya Sevens fly half Biko Adema, who is the tournament’s ambassador and Kajiado County Miss Tourism Sation Parmuat, the organisers promised to deliver a top class tournament.

“Everything is set and we ready to host as many fans as possible. It is our first edition, but we want to leave an impression both on and off the pitch. We have set up a number of camping sites and tickets are already on sale,” said Valentine Nyakiere, member of organising committee.

“This is going to be one of the best talent nurturing tournaments in the country and we are looking forward to see some good rugby there. It will be a stepping stone to most of the budding rugby players,” added Biko. The Main Cup winners will walk away with Sh250,000 as first and second-runners up get Sh100,000 and Sh75,000 respectively.

There will also be prize money for the Most Valuable Player as well as the top try scorer. Other prizes include, fourth place (Sh50,000), Plate (Sh35,000), Bowl (Sh25,000), Shield (Sh20,000), Touch Rugby (Sh10,000), Under 18 boys (Sh10,000) and Under 18 Girls (Sh10,000).
