There is more hope at the Huruma collapsed building after rescuers found nine rabbits alive in the rubble Wednesday morning.

This came as the death toll rose to 26 following the recovery of three more bodies. The rescuers are rushing against time to rescue more people following the incident.

Kenya Red Cross on Wednesday morning posted on Twitter about the rescue of the animals that were trapped in the collapsed building for five days.

“Rescuers at collapsed building in Huruma, rescued 9 rabbits alive. Hope of life under the rubble,” said a tweet from Kenya Red Cross.

The rabbits were found in one of the rooms there giving an indication one of the tenants stayed with them.

It comes a day after a six months old baby girl was pulled out alive from the rubble.

Rescuers said baby Dealeryn Saisi was found suckling her fingers in a basin wrapped in a blanket four days after the building collapsed.

The baby has since been reunited with her father, Ralson Saisi Wasike while the body of her mother was found at the City Mortuary.

The building collapsed last Friday during a heavy downpour in Nairobi and so far 136 people have been rescued.

Joint rescue efforts from the military, Kenya National Disaster Operation Centre, police, St John’s Ambulance, the Kenya Red Cross Society, the Nairobi City Fire Brigade and the National Youth Service were launched in efforts to rescue those who were trapped.

Police say they are looking for more officials who were behind the construction of the seven-storey building that was constructed on a water riparian. It was among those that were targeted for demolition.

Five people including two brothers who own the building have been charged in court.
