CORD’s shenanigans might spark another violence

Politics and sanity often don't go along but honestly this call by CORD to disband the current IEBC and form a new one needs to be given a second thought. Why would the National Council of Churches and the workers union be joining in if surely something wasn't a miss?

Looking at the issues raised by all these parties objectively, a new IEBC needs to be constituted immediately before it is too late. Most of the commissioners in the electoral body have been accused or adversely mentioned in the Chicken Gate scandal that led to conviction and jailing of some in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, some of these commissioners were and are still in office while the said investigation is still going on.

It is the requirement of our Kenyan constitution that any commissioner appointed to hold a public office but accused of improperly handling public property should step aside and pave way for investigations. But surely this isn’t the case here, why? These are some of the questions being asked by the common mwananchi watching the government vehemently defending IEBC’s tainted image.

Naturally, a commissioner confronted by such pressure mounted on the IEBC would voluntarily resign and pave way for a new beginning but the current commissioners seem to be having someone holding them firm onto their seats. Could the government be having an interest in IEBC commissioners remaining in office? And if not, why would they be so defiant and courageous? Well, the test of time will tell.

However, what I don't agree with is the formula being used to get these commissioners out of office. The constitution outlines so well the way forward in getting these commissioners out.

Why would we need people rioting all over the 47 counties to mobilize someone to get out?  I think we have enough lawyers in CORD to formulate a bill in parliament to get the commissioners out. Let the coalition leaders stop stooping so low into politicizing the country into a frenzy which might lead this country into where it was a few years ago.

Finally, this country is bigger than anyone of us. It is bigger than any commissioner and any personal or political interest should not deflect the common goal of a united Kenya. Let improper be improper, let corrupt leaders be dealt with. Only then will Kenya be what was envisaged by our fore fathers.
