Senator Kiraitu Murungi sabotaged governors’ forum – Governor Munya

MERU: Governor Peter Munya has claimed Senator Kiraitu Murungi sabotaged the just-concluded governors' conference. The governor said the senator did not want all the credit to go to him (Munya). "There was a lot of sabotage. The more than 6,000 delegates brought a lot of money to Meru traders and it beats logic why someone was out to hinder that," said Munya.

The governor claimed the senator had requested his colleagues not to go to Meru for the conference.

Munya also said they were disappointed that President Uhuru Kenyatta did not attend the event, which he termed the most successful after the Kwale and Kisumu events.

"The feeling of a lot of us is that he should have attended, but the weight of his diary might have prevented him. But we take great exception to the area leaders who tried to undermine us. This was not a Munya event, it was a national event and all stakeholders had been invited," said Munya.

Munya said he will be hosting more conferences as a way of placing the county on the national map. He said a major scientific conference to be attended by 2,000 delegates will be held in Meru on Wednesday.

"The delegates at the devolution conference were impressed by the standards we set to make sure devolution fully takes root," said Munya. He expressed confidence that he will beat Kiraitu in his South Imenti backyard in the gubernatorial race next year. Speaking during a fundraiser for Igandene Secondary School, Munya said he had garnered a large number of votes from the senator's Imenti sub-tribe, from which his wife hails.

"There is a lot of propaganda that I do not have votes here in South Imenti. You elected me last time and I believe I have not let you down," he said.
