A confession by Peris Njeri to Superintendent Samson Thoya revealed that she planned the murder with Nyambura. She gave the names of the hired killers as Geoffrey Njuguna, Elenah’s brother, Kenneth Muriithi and Anderson.

Peris confessed to paying Sh80,000 given to her by Nyambura to Muriithi and Anderson in a taxi, whose driver, Stephen Kinyanjui, confessed to witnessing the transaction.

After his arrest, Njuguna led police to the home of Muriithi, where they recovered a pair of gray trousers, which upon analysis at the Government Chemist, was found to have blood stains matching Teresa Mugure’s blood.

In mitigation, the accused told the court they were remorseful and pleaded for leniency. They claimed they are reformed people. Muriithi told the court that at the time of the murder, he was a Standard Eight dropout. He said peer pressure and unemployment made him vulnerable for the murder.

Passing the sentence on January 21, 2016, Judge Fred Ochieng’ said it did not matter who killed the girl because each of the four played a role.“Nyambura conceived the idea to eliminate baby Sheila. She then enlisted the help of her own brother, whose role was to identify and recruit the killers, while Njeri pointed out the house to the killers,” said the judge.

Judge Ochieng said that given the number of times the baby was stabbed in her neck and the fact that the stab wounds were deep, there can be no doubt the person or persons who inflicted the injuries intended either to kill her or cause grievous harm.

“I find each and every one of the four accused persons guilty of the murder. They are hereby convicted of the offence of murder,” ruled the judge. The conviction for murder in Kenya is a death sentence.

Anderson is still at large.
