Teachers Commission acting in bad faith

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) should not continue withholding funds it should remit to the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut).

It has held onto to these remittances for several months, jeopardising Knut’s operations.

With more than 250,000 members, the giant union represents the interests of teachers across the country. Besides agitating for better pay for instructors, the union is a legal entity and an important stakeholder in education.

By holding onto the monies, some 2,000 union workers at Knut have gone without pay for three months.

Given the recent acrimony between Knut and the TSC, it is easy to conclude that the teachers’ employer is determined to cripple the union.

Looking at the bigger picture, TSC is not helping matters in an education sector that requires urgent reforms to respond to numerous challenges.

For a long time, Kenyans have called for an overhaul of the school curriculum to respond to emerging trends. Examination irregularities continue to dog this sector.

The TSC should live up to its legal mandate and remit these funds with immediate effect.
