IEBC tells Senate it has no money for voter registration

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) now says it has no money to carry out voter registration.

In a statement released to the Senate yesterday, IEBC said it had planned to start the exercise between November and December, but the plans are in jeopardy as it has not been allocated funds.

Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr (Makueni ), reading the IEBC statement on behalf of the Legal Affairs Committee, accused the National Assembly of frustrating the work of the commission.

"IEBC has been starved of resources. Maybe this is meant to frustrate the registration process, as I do not understand why our colleagues in the National Assembly can give other departments money and deny such a critical function of funds," said Mr Kilonzo Jnr.

The senator was responding to concerns by his colleagues who had demanded evidence of ongoing registration of voters at the county level.

The senator said despite an announcement by the commission that it would commence the exercise this month, there were no signs of the same on the ground.
