MPs push Treasury for cash for needy, bright learners

MPs yesterday concluded debate on a bill seeking to compel the Treasury to set up a huge bursary scheme for bright but poor students.

The Basic Education (Amendment) Bill proposes that top students in every county and constituency be identified and the poor ones given the Government bursary.

It is part of MPs’ attempt to remove the ban on exam ranking. National Assembly Education Committee Chairperson Sabina Chege (Murang’a) and her deputy Julius Melly (Tinderet) rallied the House in backing the changes that also allow Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi to accredit other examining bodies aside from the State’s body.
