Man arrested for allegedly murdering KCSE candidate

Homa Bay, Kenya: Police in Homa Bay County have arrested a 22-year-old man implicated in the murder of a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination candidate.

The suspect allegedly killed Ruth Akinyi, 21, who had just completed her KCSE at Wakula Secondary School in Mfangano Island, Mbita Sub County.

The late Akinyi was murdered last Sunday.

Akinyi's uncle, Michael Osodo, told The Standard that the girl left her home at midday for school, after being summoned by her former principal.

However, she never reached her destination and the family was shocked to learn of her demise in Sunday evening.

Her body was found near a bush by children who were passing by.

Osodo said his niece sustained a serious injury on her right breast, which culminated into profuse bleeding after being stabbed with a sharp object.

"The Principal confirmed to us that he is the one who called the girl since he needed all form four students. We don't know who might have killed her," he added.

Her body was taken to Kirindo hospital mortuary for postmortem.

The County Police Commander John Omusanga said the man was arrested on Tuesday evening at Sena Market on Mfangano Island.

Omusanga said the man had injuries, which he was suspected to have sustained when he was battling with the student.

"The man was suspected from the first day of the incident when he disappeared but we are lucky to have caught up with him. He was going to seek medication at Sena Health Center," Omusanga.

The suspect narrowly escaped death from irate members of the public who wanted to lynch him.
