Arsenal's Arsene Wenger confirms he will quit but…

Arsene Wenger is refusing to set a date on when he will leave Arsenal.

But when he does decide to step down, the Frenchman is adamant he will be gone for good.

Wenger was appointed on September 30, 1996, and kicks off this 20th year of his Gunners reign with Sunday's massive home game against Manchester United.

United boss Louis van Gaal has insisted that he'll step down from his Old Trafford post in 18 months when his contract ends and he'll be almost 66.

But Wenger – who turns 66 this month and whose current Arsenal deal runs to 2017 – admits he cannot be that precise about his own exit.

Whatever happens, though, he says he would never want to change his mind and stay on in the style of Sir Alex Ferguson, who said he'd retire in 2002 but then stayed in the Man United hot-seat for another decade.

Wenger said: “I will retire, don’t worry. But no, I haven’t decided on a plan yet. I think it can be more instinctive and impulsive than that.

“I’ve heard that so many times, ‘Next year I will retire’ and then they continue, or go somewhere else.

"I think one thing is for sure that, when I retire, I will really retire.”

But Wenger is banking on the home support to overcome United.

He said: “Man United won all their championships at home... it’s always won at Old Trafford. We have a big game at home now and the advantage is to win the big game at home.

“It’s the first massive match for the top of the table. Without the home form, you don’t win the championship, that’s for sure.”

One man Wenger will hope to keep very quiet is Anthony Martial – a player he wanted for the Gunners.

Wenger insists Arsenal never made an approach because Monaco told him the young forward would not be allowed to leave, and the French side's sporting director Vadim Vasilyev backs that up.

Vasilyev said: “It was not in our plans to sell Anthony Martial. But you need to be realistic... and we had to come up with a figure. The demand for him put us in a good position.”
