Dissolving county won't achieve much, Makueni leaders say

The possibility of a snap election in Makueni County slightly over one year before the next General Election scheduled for August 2017, does not augur well with majority of county leaders.

Assembly Deputy Speaker Bernard Musau, who is also Makindu, Kiboko, Twaandu Ward Rep says dissolving the county and subjecting the people to an election just a year before another, is a waste of time and resources.

“The earliest a snap election can be conducted in Makueni is April 2016. The short period between that election and the next one will not achieve much. If it gets to that point, then I fear for the people of Makueni because it will be a waste of time and resources,” says Musau.

Mr Musau however says he does not see the county being dissolved noting that a lot can be done during the 90 days window of suspension.

He faults the Mohamed Nyaoga commission for making its report “rather late in the day” and “opening old wounds.”
“Even as the commission came to Makueni, the fights had already ended. Today, the Governor and the Speaker consult. The assembly and the executive are in good terms,” he says.

His sentiments are shared by Minority Leader John Mwenze, who says a lot of water has gone under the bridge since the commission was formed.

He says should a snap election be called, it will get the sitting MCAs and even aspirants unawares.

“People are prepared for elections in 2017 and not 2016. Considering the logistics involved in campaigns, I might not contest in 2016 but will do so in 2017. It will be a nightmare for a new entrant to prove his worth in such a short period,” the Nguumo Ward Rep says.

Makueni MP Daniel Maanzo says it will not be a good move to dissolve the county saying such a move will sink the county further. Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr sets tough conditions for both arms of the county should they require him to intervene on their behalf at the Senate.

“I represent both county executive, assembly and protect the interests of the people. Both parties must sign a written memorandum, call the public then I would have a mandate as their senator,” he says.
