Cholera claims 3 lives in Kogelo village

KISUMU: Three people died and nine others hospitalized following a cholera outbreak in Kogelo village, Siaya County.

The county chief officer of health Jalango Midiwo said that three patients are undergoing treatment at Siaya county referral hospital, another three at Dienya dispensary while the remaining three are at Kogelo dispensary

"We highly suspect River Orombe that is between Alego and Gem as the major cause of the outbreak. Residents should treat and boil water from that river before consumption and report any cases of diarrhoea,"said Midiwo.

The county director of health Samuel Omondi said that the first case was reported on Tuesday and the patient died while receiving treatment at the hospital while the other two died at home.

Dr Omondi stated that they have taken drastic measures in an effort to contain the disease to prevent its spread.

"Residents should understand the need to shun from traditional beliefs that rain water can be consumed without treatment, especially now that we are experiencing heavy rains in the region," added Omondi.

Addressing the media at the county referral hospital, the nursing officer in charge, Helen Okello said that the three patients were members of the same family.

"They were brought at the facility highly dehydrated but are currently in stable condition. Cholera cases are not transferred but managed at the nearest dispensary so in case of any more cases they will be immediately treated," she said.

As a result food hawking and eating at funerals have been banned in the affected areas.
