Kenyan man, Gitonga Wathanga, wants tougher laws on corruption

A Kenyan has petitioned the National Assembly to enact a new stringent law to deal with runaway corruption.

Gitonga Wathanga laments that corruption, which falls under economic crimes, has reached alarming levels and ants MPs to enact a new legislation that will make it difficult and risky to engage in corruption.

The petition also seeks to deny lawyers the autonomy to undertake financial and property transactions on behalf of clients, including determining how much is paid for execution of a will.

"Enact new or amend existing legislation to make it mandatory legal requirement that all property transactions be conducted through a recognised bank and that the names of the account holders in the process be that of the buyer and seller," he said.

Speaker Justin Muturi committed the petition to the Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs.

"Mr Wathanga has petitioned the House to initiate the process of enacting legislations in regard to registration of properties... to provide for a mandatory registration of properties by owners, and for establishment of a property registry in the Attorney General's office to ensure all property transactions by banks bear names of buyers and sellers," said Mr Muturi.
