Meru Governor Peter Munya has been in Nairobi for the better part of the week for engagements linked to US President Barrack Obama’s visit.

Munya’s aides confirmed he had been officially invited to a State House meeting and joint press briefing by Presidents Obama and his host Uhuru Kenyatta.

The chairman of the Council of Governors had also been officially invited for the town hall address by President Obama to 5,000 pre-selected Kenyans; however, his aides could not tell whether Munya had an invitation to the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES).

Good sign

Legislators from Meru, led by Meru parliamentary group chairman Kathuri Murungi (South Imenti) hailed Obama’s speech at the GES opening and also lauded President Uhuru’s pledge to continue supporting youth entrepreneurs and innovators.

Meru County MP Florence Kajuju termed the speech as extremely moving, saying “I am proud of Obama because he appreciates his African roots. He believes in women entrepreneurs and has pledged to support women,” said Ms Kajuju.

Kajuju also praised Obama for challenging men to believe more in women by allowing them (women) to make use of available opportunities to improve the society.

“This is a good sign as we fight for the implementation of the gender rule,” she added.

Rahim Dawood (Imenti North) praised Obama for seeking to help demystify the stereotype that Kenya was unsafe and lacked what it takes for businesses and entrepreneurship to prosper.

“His speech and appearance at the GES is a major endorsement for Kenya and Sub-Saharan Africa,” said Dawood.
