Man commits suicide after mother stops him from selling cow

A 40-year-old mason hanged himself after he was stopped from selling a cow in Mihango, Subukia sub-county.

Wilson Gichohi wanted to sell his only cow but his mother refused and warned anyone against buying the animal.

Area police boss Alex Ng’ang’a said Mr Gichohi, a father of five, was found dangling from a piece of rope by his family. Mr Ng’ang’a said Gichohi had killed the cow on Sunday night before hanging himself. Police took his body to the Nyahururu Sub-County Hospital mortuary for a postmortem.

In a separate incident, an 80-year-old man committed suicide by ingesting poison in Burgei, Rongai sub-county, following family wrangles over the weekend.

Mathew Chumba is said to have boarded a motorcycle to Rongai trading centre where he bought livestock drugs, claiming he wanted to treat his cow.

Vincent Koech, a neighbour, said after purchasing the drugs, Mr Chumba, a traditional herbalist, went to an open field in the village, mixed them with a local brew and drank it.

Mr Koech said villagers rushed to Chumba’s help when he cried for help but they were unable to rescue him even after giving first aid.

His body was taken to the Nakuru Municipal mortuary for a postmortem as residents and local administrators traced members of his family.

According to residents, Chumba might have committed suicide following quarrels with his family that lives in Bomet County.

“Chumba has been staying with friends; he claimed to have differed with his family,” said Koech.
