Malaysian firm agrees to tarmac 100km road in Embu

EMBU: County Government has entered into an agreement with a Malaysian construction company to tarmac 100 kilometres of roads at a cost of Sh3.7 billion, payable within 10 years’ time.

Governor Martin Wambora and Malaysian Probase Manufacturing Company Managing Director Seow Cheng signed the memorandum of understanding at the weekend as the first step towards the construction of low cost roads.

Mr Wambora said the initiative is part of the county's infrastructural development plan to improve road network at a manageable cost.

"Work of the initial 12.2 kilometre Embu-Kibugu road tarmacking project will commence soon through the Probase Technology, while extension to other sub-counties will follow thereafter. We want to link major shopping centres in the county with tarmac," he said.

Chyeng assured that the road project will be be made to acceptable standards, adding that the company will provide free maintenance services to the roads for five years once completed.

At the same time, the national government has announced plans to build a multi-billion ring-road to link Embu, Kibugu, Manyatta, Runyenjes, Siakago, Kiritiri and Makima sections of the county.

Senator Lenny Kivuri said physicality studies have already been done in readiness for the project.
