A sombre mood engulfed Muchui village in Gatundu North on Monday when five members of the same family, who perished in a road accident in Garrissa a fortnight ago, were laid to rest.

Michael Muiru 43, his wife and their three children perished after a saloon car in which they were traveling  collided head-on with a bus at Bagali, some 10 kilometres from Garissa town.

The family was traveling from Thika to Garrissa to visit Mr Muiru’s brother when the accident occurred. Only Joseph Njoroge, their son, survived the accident. They were buried in a mass grave.

Muiru was a prison warder at Wundanyi in Taita Taveta county.

Leaders who attended the funeral challenged the Government to end road carnage which they said had reached alarming levels.

Kiambu Women's Representative Ann Nyokabi called on National Transport and Safety Authority and the traffic department to fully enforce the new traffic rules.

Area MP Kigo Njenga called upon motorists to respect and be mindful of the welfare of other road users to avert unwarranted road accidents.

“As motorists, we must live and let others live,” said Mr Njenga.
