First Lady Margaret Kenyatta launches Sh12m fistula camp

Women living with obstetric fistula will benefit from free surgeries following the launch of Sh12 million National Fistula Camp in Kenyatta National Hospital.

Speaking during the launch, First Lady Margaret Kenyatta said most women who deliver under unskilled care are young, uneducated and living in poverty, hence at risk of birth complications, which could lead to obstetric fistula.

"Child birth should be a time of joy and pride for every mother. However, women with fistula lose their dignity and go through stigma in the society," she said.

Though significant strides have been made to eliminate fistula globally and in Kenya, the First Lady urged civil society to prioritise advocacy for maternal and newborn health.
