Man to hang for killing granny over food

A middle-aged man has been sentenced to death by a Homa Bay court for murdering his grandmother.

Gordon Odhiambo was convicted before Justice David Majanja for killing his grandmother, Turfosa Ager, over food in Homa Bay County.

Valary Ongeti for the prosecution said the accused assaulted his grandmother with an axe on September 27, 2011 at Kakwa Jwok village in Rachuonyo North Sub-County.

But Odhiambo denied the charge.

All 11 witnesses testified that the deceased was found lying in a pool of blood that fateful evening.

A medical doctor who examined the deceased's body under the name PW6, told the court the woman died after receiving serious cuts on the neck and head.

"The cause of death was a heart attack that resulted from the injuries she sustained," said the doctor.

Another witness, PW3, said the accused had threatened to kill her if she denied him food.

Majanja ruled that evidences adduced in court were enough to convince a right-thinking member of the society that the accused was guilty of the offence.

"Evidence of the doctor and the stained axe which was used have shown that the accused killed the deceased, hence I convict him," said Majanja.

The convict did not utter any word in mitigation before he was given 14 days to appeal.
