11-year-old girl stabbed by father over homework

An eleven-year-old girl is receiving treatment at Molo District hospital in Nakuru County after she was allegedly stabbed by her father for failing to complete a school assignment.

According to the Standard Three pupil, the father, a mortuary attendant, came home around 6pm on Saturday and asked her why she had not done the assignment.

She claimed he then locked her in the house and started beating her up before stabbing her on the head several times with a kitchen knife.

"He asked me why I had not done my school assignment and before I responded, he started kicking me and later stabbed me on the head using a knife," said the minor. She said the father also threatened to kill her if she told anyone what had happened.

The suspect is then said to have instructed the minor to take a shower, wipe all blood stains in the house and go to bed as he headed to a local drinking den.

The mother said she was away and was shocked to find her daughter bleeding profusely when she came back home in the evening. The woman said the suspect has been violent to the minor, and sometimes punishes her without clear reason.

The suspect was seized by police at a drinking den after angry neighbours, who had got wind of the incident, threatened to lynch him.

Women in the area complained their husbands always overrule them when they question them over child abuse. Lovina Akinyi, a resident, called on children's department to take custody of the child, claiming the father might harm her if he is released.

Molo deputy OCPD Paul Mbusia said police have commenced investigations and the suspect will soon be arraigned in court. A doctor at Molo District Hospital said the child was out of danger.
