Policeman kills two colleagues before ending his life in Meru love triangle

MERU: A police officer shot dead his two colleagues before turning the gun on himself in a love triangle incident in Mutuati area, Igembe North, Meru County.

Constable Joseph Kipng’etich Cheruiyot, based at the Laare Police Station shot dead Police Constable Grace Sheila Kioko, based at Mutuati Patrol Base and Chief Inspector Benson Mwadime, who was in charge of the Kinisa General Service Unit (GSU) camp before killing himself.

The incident happened on Sunday night in a bar.

Cheruiyot’s colleagues said he planned to marry Ms Kioko. He is said to have been informed Ms Kioko and Mwadime were in the bar before he picked up his gun and left.

Kenya Police spokesperson Zipporah Mboroki termed the incident unfortunate.

After Cheruiyot picked the gun, he rode to Club Tenax and Restaurant in Mutuati market, about eight kilometres from the police station where he opened fire killing the two.

He found the two having drinks and without uttering a word, he opened fire on them killing them before shooting himself.

The club management later called police who confirmed the three were all serving officers. The bodies were later moved to the local mortuary.

Cheruiyot’s colleagues said he had informed them he was in love with Ms Kioko and planned to marry her later in the year.
