EACC warns on escorting State officials

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has banned the public from accompanying those who have been summoned to appear before the commission for ongoing investigations.

In a statement, EACC Chief Executive Officer Halakhe Waqo said some of those summoned to appear before the commission are arriving at Integrity Centre while accompanied by huge crowds in the name of demonstrating support and solidarity.

Mr Waqo said EACC is currently undertaking investigations touching on the high profile Government officials who President Uhuru Kenyatta asked to step aside pending conclusion of investigations. He said the crowds accompanying those mentioned on the so called 'list of shame' interfere with provision of services.

"The commission wishes to condemn this practice in the strongest terms possible. Those summoned for questioning to any of our offices should only be accompanied by people whose presence in the interviewing may be required such as advocates or witnesses," Waqo said.

Proper identification

He said the commission shall require proper identification of the advocates or witnesses accompanying them.

Waqo said EACC shall not and has not been deterred from undertaking its mandate by the presence of such crowds and advised the public to desist from being misused.

"The commission requests and encourages those who are called upon to furnish evidence or record statements to strictly abide by the time schedules and routines indicated to avoid inconveniences," Waqo said.

Those mentioned have been appearing at EACC offices countrywide.
