Trans-Nzoia County to set up heroes’ corner for 10 victims of Garissa University attack

Trans-Nzoia County Government will set up a heroes’ corner in Kitale to be named after 10 students from the area who were brutally killed by Al Shabaab militants at Garissa University College.

Deputy Governor Stanley Tarus said the county government will identify an area within the town to set up the heroes’ corner.

Tarus was responding to a proposal by Bidii ward representative Mathews Nyarango that the county government honour the students by setting up land for a heroes’ corner.

“We have lost brilliant future leaders. It is a big loss to the county and let us honour them by creating a heroes’ corner and renamed after them,” Nyarango proposed during the send off of one of the victims, Elizabeth Musinai in Aruba village.

The other victims are James Ojode, Daina Musabi, Obed Okiring, Oliver Maina, Faith Chepchirchir, Eliud Wafula, Isaac Kipsogei, Vyonne Makori and Kefa Chisare.

Dr Tarus promised that the county government will identify an area for that.

The county leadership came under heavy criticism from leaders led by nominated ward representative Milka Zaidi for lack of support to the families of the students and failure by Governor Patrick Khaemba to organise a requiem mass for the slain students.

“We have not seen the presence of county leadership and the governor. Other governors were seen consoling families in Nairobi when the bodies were transported from Garissa but our governor was nowhere," charged Zaidi.

But Tarus absolved the governor from condemnation, saying the county leadership had brought the family Sh50,000 from the governor.
