Class Eight, Form Four candidates to sit county-sponsored examinations

Mandera, Kenya: More than 16,000 primary and secondary school students are expected to sit for pre-mock examinations.

The examinations have been sponsored by the county government in a move aimed at boosting the students’ performance as they prepare for national examinations.

Speaking during the distribution of exam papers, County Secretary Okash Adan said this was an academic initiative fully funded by the county government in an effort to help students prepare for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education.

SECOND YEAR

“This will be the second year that the county government has sponsored such examinations for students in Class Eight and Form Four within the schools in Mandera. The exams will be distributed to all the six sub-counties,” he said.

Education Executive Johora Mohamed said the county will continue to support all the basic education programmes fully despite the same being the mandate of the national government.

“Last year, only Form Four and Class Eight students benefited from the county sponsored pre-mock exams, which is one of the reasons for our improved performance in the 2014 national examinations,” she said.

Ms Mohamed added that this year Class Seven and Form Three pupils will be involved.

This year 2,780 Form Four candidates and 2,832 Form Three students are sitting for the mocks. While in primary schools 4,645 Standard Eight pupils and 6099 Standard Seven pupils will be examined.

Kenya National Union of Teachers Mandera branch secretary, Kullow Sheikh, called for devolution of basic education to allow for homegrown solutions within the sector.
