Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission boss vows to leave office if named

Kenya: Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Isaack Hassan has said he will step aside if his name appears in the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) report to be debated in Parliament today.

Mr Hassan distanced the commission from what was facing Energy Cabinet Secretay Davis Chirchir, saying his stepping aside was as a result of what transpired at the ministry and not the electoral commission.

Prior to his appointment to the Cabinet, Chirchir served as a commissioner in IEBC's predecessor Interim Independent Electoral Commission whose officials were implicated in bribery during proceedings at a United Kingdom court against two directors of a British firm.

Chirchir and Hassan have previously been questioned over the 'Chickengate' scandal.

"I am waiting for tomorrow (Today) to see if my name is there, and yes I will step aside if it is," said Hassan while addressing the Press yesterday at a Nairobi hotel during a Memorandum of Understanding signing ceremony between IEBC and Association of World Election Bodies.
