Top Coast DJs

Celebrated decks master VJ Delph, arguably Kenya’s first ever video-jockey is one of the highest rated spinners in Kenya. He controls the shows in Mombasa where he plays at several clubs when he is not at the decks on international gigs.

His versatile nature has seen him venture into electronic, house and trance music, bringing the house down in exclusive clubs like Il Covo. And thanks to his craft, the rather social Delph is now living the celebrity lifestyle with a very flashy house and nice rides to show for it.

He commands the upmarket calibre of clients that include tourists and the Asian market that love trance and house. It is believed that Delph pockets about Sh600,000 a month from the shows he hosts.

DJ Lenium The bulky Jerry Otieno was the in-house spinmaster at Allidina Visram High School while still a student. The school has also produced another popular Kenyan decks man, Kaytrixx who is now an all-round entertainer.

Apart from being one of Mombasa’s best, Lenium is also a karaoke host, a radio presenter and an actor.

As a DJ and radio host, he has received over 22 nominations and has won seven awards, making him the most decorated from the region.

DJ Bunduki The ‘matatu’ DJ, Bunduki gained popularity through mixes that were played in almost all matatus, which he confesses to have distributed for more than five years. With an interesting name, he has risen through the ranks fast, a fete only matched by DJ Kalonje.

“Even though many might not recognise me in streets as a DJ, I have managed to curve a niche for myself in the showbiz industry as the go-to-guy when it comes to music distribution,” he tells Pulse.

On average, he distributes three mixes a month and he has gotten approval from A-list artistes who send him their latest singles.

DJ Sashy The only female DJ on the list, Sarah Wanjiru, is arguably the queen of the decks at the Coast. A resident spinner at the exclusive Tapas Lounge, she plays on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

“I do other freelance gigs on the other days,” the straight-talking DJ says. Set to launch an all-female DJs unit soon, she explains that most ladies find it hard to spin in Mombasa, partly because they do not push their hustle hard.

“As a female DJ, you are always trying to prove the critics wrong and that is what most ladies are not comfortable with,” says the professional make-up artiste and beauty therapist, who is in her third year of showbiz.

DJ Bonnez A one-time member of the East Coast Crew which ruled the Coast some years back, Bonnez has taken a nationwide look at his trade with his move to Spin Cycle, associated with Kaytrixx.

With a popular show on Sundays at Big Tree, Bonnez has also been playing at Sheba, Tapas and Big Tree every week. He has also played at Belavista, Bobs Bar and Lafolia among other major night spots.

“It has been eight years of hard work and I stand out mostly because I engage well with my crowd,” says the director of Spin Cycle, Mombasa. He works closely with Phauz, a member of Spin Cycle who plays in major clubs including, The Lounge, Sheba, Bobs Bar and Big tree.

DJ Bello Another veteran spinmaster with over eight years of experience, DJ Bello has come a long way to make a name for himself.

“I used to be mobile. I would hire sound and mixing equipment from a friend and entertain people at weddings and small parties until I managed to buy my own stuff,” says Bello, who is currently the head of entertainment at the lavish Crystal Lounge at Bliss Resort, Nyali.

He worked at Florida and Bobs Bar as the resident DJ before freelancing in the East African region.
