Football Kenya Federation now proposes two-zone Premier League

TURNING POINT: AMBROSE DICKSON OTIENO RACHIER

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has proposed that the country should have two zones of the top tier league in a bid to end the current impasse.

In a letter to Kenyan Premier League (KPL) chairman Ambrose Rachier, the federation's chairman Sam Nyamweya said the suggestion was a way of settling the matter out of court.

“We suggest settlement of the matters as follows: That in compliance with Art 10(1), there shall be one Premier League known as FKF Premier League, a matter that has already been agreed by all concerned parties,” he said.

“That the FKF Premier League shall comprise two zones, ‘A’ and ‘B’ with teams promoted from the National Super League constituting Zone ‘B’ while those that previously participated in the KPL-run limited league shall participate in Zone ‘A’.

"At the end of the season, the top two teams from either zone shall play a round-robin mini-league to determine the champion. The remaining teams shall participate in a one-off play-off to get those that remain in the league, with the losers facing relegation to the National Super League (NSL).”

Nyamweya further suggested two teams would be promoted to complete an 18-team league from next season.

“This is in our considered opinion, is the best solution that gives us a way forward which accommodates everyone because we find ourselves in a unique situation and one we must manage well to ensure interests of the club are given due priority,” he said.

The KPL previously declined this proposal and it is not clear whether they will consider it this time around.
